The other day, I was checking out the mighty “Easy Digital Downloads” plugin, and realized that I needed to install the “Easy Digital Downloads – External Products” plugin in order to link to an external URL for a few items.
Why? Well, the plugin is great, but if you use it as is, then website visitors will be taken away from your website when clicking on external product downloads.
This is not ideal, and can actually lower conversions.
Currently, the external products plugin does not support opening external product downloads in a new window or tab.
Luckily, there’s an easy fix.
I found a temporary (and fast) workaround as a solution.
In your site files, open up “template-overrides.php” in the plugin “edd-external-plugins.”
You can find the exact location by going here:
“wp-content —> plugins —> edd-external-plugins —> includes —> template-overrides.php”
Next, find this line (currently line 49, as of the date of this post, but I’d double check in case it has changed):
'<a class="%1$s" href="%2$s">%3$s</a>'
And modify it like so:
'<a class="%1$s" target="_blank" href="%2$s">%3$s</a>'
And that’s it! Hope it helps somebody else out there.
